Wildlife Track and Sign Evaluations and Education Programs

CyberTracker Wildlife Track and Sign Evaluations

The CyberTracker evaluation is a rigorous two-day field evaluation; students face questions about a variety of tracks and sign.  This may include identification of mammals, birds, reptiles, and invertebrates by tracks or sign such as scat, beds, burrows, runs and browse.  The evaluation may also include a variety of other tests such as questions on behaviour or questions regarding the direction and speed of travel.  Evaluation days may be as long as ten hours on each day, and both days are spent entirely in the field. Typically, the evaluation takes place in one location on the first day and a second location on the second day.  Morning meeting times are usually around 7:30.  The CyberTracker certification system is the only international standard for evaluating and certifying animal trackers.

The evaluations are excellent learning opportunities and therefore may also be viewed as weekend workshops.  Tracks and sign encountered are tested in question groups of approximately 6-12.  After students have submitted their answers to a particular group of questions, we review the sign/tracks in detail.   As a result, opportunities to learn and improve occur DURING the evaluation.

Our next evaluation will be conducted by accomplished tracker Jonah Evans on June 23rd and 24th, 2012.  Jonah is the creator of the iTrack Wildlife app for iPhone and iTouch, and the co-author of the excellent new book ”Field Guide to Animal Tracks and Scat of California” (California Natural History Guides).  Sign up here!
